The Undertow

Undertow- A current of water below the surface, moving in a different direction from the surface current.

The undertow is a place that no one wants to find themselves in, but that everyone wants to survive. We all become involved in a personal undertow of some sort in life, but sometimes it’s hard to determine exactly when things went wrong. It could be a relationship that started out smoothly but is now going down a dead-end path, or a once promising job that is now stagnant and demanding.

No one wants to admit that they are caught in an undertow. In fact, we may find ourselves in denial about our situation for quite awhile. We convince ourselves that it’s not that bad, or that if we wait it out things will get better. Meanwhile, the shore gets farther and farther away. Soon, we cannot even see the land, and we feel an impending sense of doom. We become so submerged in our personal undertow that no one even knows we are in trouble, and we aren’t even sure how to call out for help.

The space of the undertow is the perfect opportunity to surrender and call for help.

Surrender happens when we realize things are out of our control and that everything we have tried has failed to yield the results we are looking for. Surrender is not giving up, but it is giving in to the higher knowledge that rests intrinsically within us. Being caught in the undertow is our chance to allow our inspired knowledge to guide us instead of our acquired knowledge, which is often extremely faulty and subject to the counter-productivity of anxiety and fear.

There is a stillness within us that is always waiting for us to call out for help, and it always answers. It is always waiting, and It always answers. The stillness knows all of our desires, especially the ones that we cannot put into words. It is waiting for us to yield so that it can spring into action. It knows exactly what to do when we do not.

The thing that saves us almost never looks the way we pictured it. The imprints and perceptions we have obtained over our lifetimes severely restrict our ability to see the endless possibilities and infinite potential that lies within us. But the stillness knows, and the stillness is waiting for our undertow moment of surrender to show us all of the wonders that it has been saving for us.

Trusting that our moment of salvation is coming requires laser focus and an unwavering knowing that our secret hopes and desires have been heard and that they will manifest at exactly the right moment. What more perfect moment of focus is there than when we are caught in a current that is threatening to take us away from the life that we have envisioned so dearly? What more perfect moment to focus on the love we desire to feel and share, or on the lives we wish to touch and inspire?

Regardless of the specifics of your personal undertow, know that you can survive. Yield. Surrender. Trust.

And so it is.
